MrHoni's Dogs
Kandy was my first

For my 9th birthday, my aunt brought Kandy into my life. Kandy was such a sweetie. It's Kandy with a "K" as my sisters' and my name began with "K".
I remember my mom on her hands and knees washing the floor and making a little pile of dirt and crumbs. There was Kandy with her mouth in the pile seeing what she could find. Little did I know at the time that Kandy was a mix of beagle and daschund and that one day I would have those breeds living the life with me. This makes sense as another memory of Kandy is giving her a whole can of food, putting it in her bowl, dumping the garbage outside and when I came back in, the food was gone. Little piggy she was. She became a bit overweight!
Kandy made it to 13. I had moved after college and was not able to bring her with me. She was bonded to my mother and that was the best place for her.

Davina, first mini wiener

When I was in college, I knew I wanted a female mini daschund. I saw a cute girl at school with her mini and other girls were fawning over the cutie (doxie). I thought that was my key to a woman's heart. I had come up with her name. Davina "Da wiener" dog. So clever of me! For 30+ years I'd never heard of anyone with that name. As far as I knew, I had made it up. At my last corporate job I met a Davina!
I was able to bring Davina home when I was finally able to afford my own place. Just a small 2 bedroom condo with an enclosed balcony. I taught Davina to use a litter box and installed a dog door so she could go out on her own. However, she would stand in the litter box, put her hind legs on the edge of the litter box and tinkle outside the box. So I made a bigger box and put the smaller box in it. Success!
Davina loved to bury under the covers on the heated waterbed during the summer. She was some cool doggie that needed to be warm. Davina was about 7 when I married MrsHoni. At first, when MrHoni and MrsHoni would kiss, Davina would bark at MrsHoni. Over time, just like Kandy, my baby turned to the woman in my life and bonded with her.
MrsHoni and I lived in a 2 story townhouse. One of the funniest things I remember about Davina is one morning we woke up and there was an easter egg in the bedroom. During the night, Davina had gotten up on the couch, popped over onto the dining table, grabbed an egg, somehow got down without hurting herself and brought the egg upstairs. She also would put some kibble in her mouth and come upstairs, drop the kibble on the floor and eat it. She was such a funny dog.

Casey, my not so tiny Yorkie

Casey arrived as a buddy for Davina. My first day at work after bringing Casey home, I had to come back home to be with him. I had an answering machine that could listen to sounds in the home, so I called the home number to listen. I heard Casey crying and I couldn't bear it.
For potty time, Casey learned to use the liter box in just a couple days after watching Davina. What a good boy!
Casey would carry his rawhide chew sticks like a cigar and "bury" them in a corner. He liked to sit in my lap, but there were times he wouldn't pay enough attention when jumping up onto the recliner to be with me and would land on top of Davina. Davina was not pleased!
I don't think Casey particularly enjoyed having a bath, but I could say to him that it was time for a bath and he would jump into the tub. I never took him to a groomer and would keep his hair long, but trimmed. One day MrsHoni decided he should be clipped with a puppy cut. MrsHoni should not look for a job as a groomer!

Molly, our first rescue

Molly was 5 years old when we saved her from a family that was going to take her to the pound. We found she spent most of her days tied up in the garage. When we brought her out to our car, she wanted to hop into the trunk. She was the first lemon beagle that we had seen. We thought beagles were only tri-colored.
We didn't have much knowledge about beagles and for quite a while, we just left the food out in a food dispenser as Davina and Casey only ate when they felt like it and usually when I came home from work. While the food didn't disappear as one might think, Molly started to "grow". We realized we needed to have a set feeding schedule.
Most of my memories of Molly revolve around food. There was the time, she grabbed some pizza off the plate and shook it, causing sauce to fly onto the table, the carpet and onto the drapes. We had to learn to push in the dining chairs or food would be gone. One time my mother was visiting from Tucson and we told her to make sure to push her chair in. Well she didn't and Molly enjoyed my mother's chicken breast; Mom went hungry that night.
One day Molly swiped a 1/2 ear of corn from the table with the corn skewers still attached. We couldn't get the corn from her and she swallowed it. X-ray showed the ear of corn and skewer attached. I wished I had a copy of that x-ray. The vet saved it to show school kids on field trips.
One last tidbit of Molly's passion for food was that she learned to trade for food. She would bring things and in return get a kibble. We keep a box of stuffed toys in the upstairs bedroom. Molly brings a toy and gets a kibble, then turns around and brings another toy. This can go on for awhile. I have a photo of her and Amy in the bathroom area with a pile of toys around them.

Vienna, little Miss Independent

When Davina passed, I wanted another mini brown wiener dog. Vienna was so cute and I was enchanted by her. We brought her and Snausage home that day.
During the daytime, Vienna lived in the kitchen with Snausage. They were setup quite comfy with a nice cosy crate (door off), toys, and litter box. We were concerned that Vienna was so tiny that she could get stuck between the dishwasher and cabinets, so towels were rolled and placed into the openings. Many months later when Vienna had grown and would not be able to wedge between the dishwasher and cabinets, MrHoni decided that it was a good time to remove the towels. The next day upon returning from work, MrHoni was astounded to see that the top surface of the vinyl floor was being peeled away. Which of these two were the culprits? I think they collaborated on this and continued to strip the floor over time.
Our upstairs bedroom was the place we spent the most time. All the dogs would sleep with us, of course, and it was good they were small dogs. I made a ramp for Vienna and Snausage to get up and off the bed. During the early morning, I would hear Vienna go down the ramp, jump in the litter box we kept in the bathroom area , jump out and then she would come back up the ramp and find a nice cosy place to bury in the bed.
As Vienna got older she was not quite the cuddle bug as the others were. She is very independent but she and Snausage do hang out and sleep together. As Davina did, Vienna likes to bury under a blanket. She can be found by looking for a blanket with just a little nose peaking out.

Snausage, the velcro dog

As mentioned, Snausage became a member of our family the same time as Vienna. Snausage was brought out in a laundry basket with her siblings. I picked her because she was very affectionate to us and was, as I recall, the quieter of the bunch, which, as it turned out, was not her true nature. MrsHoni, who insists she has the better memory, tells me that Snausage was quite the whiner and was telling us to please take her home. She is a dappled doxie; another type of coat we had not seen before.
Snausage and Vienna lived with us in the townhouse their first year until we moved to our current home. Gates were placed in the 2 entrances to the kitchen, where they lived during the day. One evening we came home from work and found an image of South America on the wall. We are convinced that Snausage chewed off the wallpaper and into the wall to make this image. Was she telling us she would like to visit Brazil for Carnival?
Before Vienna and Snausage had all their shots, they were not taken on walks. We would get outside the house with Casey and Molly and you would hear these two wiener dogs screaming like they were being murdered!
I say Snausage is my velcro dog because before I would get to the couch she would have anticipated my intention and have flown up onto the couch before I could sit. She would hang out in my lap all evening. She did this with everyone.
Because Vienna and Snausage pee upstairs they must stay down in the kitchen/family room. There is a gate between this area and the living room. At times, the gate is not fully closed to allow Amy or Teddie to get through, so Snausage would play a game where she pushes open the gate with her nose and comes upstairs where I'm usually in my office room with some of the other doggies. If she sees me, she turns around and takes off flying down the stairs, rushing through the living room and diving into her bed. Such a silly girl.

Amy, our Brat

MrsHoni decided she need a playmate for Molly, who was getting older. Amy's parents were show dogs, but since Amy would not keep her tail up, the breeder didn't want to keep her for show, which worked great for us. I was not working any corporate jobs at the time, so I got to enjoy all the fun of puppyhood. Over several months, Amy proceeded to remove all plants from the ground, disabled all outdoor ground lighting as well as pulled out all the drip irrigation.
She and Molly had so much fun. She brought a lot of energy and life back to Molly, however Molly was not a good role model for Amy. Our dear Molly taught Amy many of her habits, some of which Molly was very proficient, such as trading stuffed toys for a treat. Amy did learn to go outside and bring in rocks to trade for food at the dining table. She selected a few times during the day and evening where she has decided that everyone needs a snack. She is very insistent about this.
The dictionary defines "brat" as spoiled and ill-mannered. That's our Amy. Most of this brattiness revolves around food. She is a clock watcher and when it is 4pm or close to 4pm it is time for dinner and she will let us know. MrsHoni has a massage chair in the living room and Amy will jump on top of MrsHoni and with her paw push on the wife's mouth or try to pry open her eyes. This was also a common occurrence during the morning before breakfast feeding time. It's not all Amy's fault as her Aunt Janet and her mommy have trained her with these habits. How can you not look at that face and want to give her a treat!
Both Molly and Amy were very quick to learn tricks as they were motivated by food. MrsHoni decided to teach them to "talk"; brilliant idea dear!

Teddie, Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde

One day MrHoni and MrsHoni went to the mall where MrHoni had his eyes on some goodies at the Apple store. In this mall was a pet boutique. We wandered in and by fate there was a rescue organization inside the store. We noticed Teddie and at first we thought he was a beagle because of his tricolor markings, but we learned he is a Rat Terrier. MrsHoni held him for an hour while we wandered around and MrHoni completed his visit to the Apple store. We just had to leave with Teddie. To this day, Teddie loves to be held.
While Teddie can be such a sweetie, he did come with a demonic side. We learned that Teddie had Parvo as a baby and of course he survived. They told us he had some issues with possessiveness and the experience of Parvo may contribute to his Jekyll/Hyde personality. For a long while, if MrsHoni was holding Teddie and MrHoni looked at Teddie or talked to Teddie, he would make what we call "The Face". MrHoni has learned over the years that there are many situations where Teddie will make "The Face" and is to be left alone.
Teddie is a sun worshipper. He loves to bask outside in the sun and inside he seeks out a spot where the sun is shining through a window. Usually he can be found on the stairs. More than once, Teddie has used the math he learned in doggie school and calculated the angle of the sun and determined that there would be a spot of sun on the card table where MrsHoni enjoys putting together puzzles. We've found him laying on top of a puzzle more than once.
He is a barker and gets quite noisy when he hears the UPS truck coming down the street with deliveries for MrHoni. MrHoni thought it would be nice to place the extra dog stairs next to one of the bedroom windows that gets lots of light and faces out to the front of the house. Perfect place for Teddie to monitor the neighborhood and bark and anything that moved out there.
With Molly's passing, Amy needed a playmate as the wiener dogs were not into playing with her. Just like Amy became Molly's playmate, so became Teddie with Amy. They played and wrestled so much that Amy was getting plenty of extra exercise and she lost weight. Unfortunately for Amy, sometimes there was just too much Teddie. Amy likes to be up on the couch and Teddie will bound up the stairs onto the couch and plop himself on top of Amy. Amy will yell at him, just like brothers and sisters would. "Mom, he's touching me"; "Mom he's looking at me".
We learned that beagle is one of the breeds that are mixed into the Rat Terrier and we feel it is a dominate trait with him. We call him the "wannabeagle". Besides his beagle like markings he is very motivated by food. He begs to get his teeth brushed because of the poultry flavored toothpaste. Both he and Amy will stare at Vienna's bowl while she eats her food. His dark side will come through if I am sitting on the couch with a snack. Teddie will sit next to me and if any of the other kids make their way our direction, even 10 feet away, he will give them "The Face".

Nicky and Nora, The Gangstas
Nicky and Nora came to live with us when MrsHoni's mother passed away. They came in like they owned the place; like they were Gansta's as MrsHoni's sister called them. Well that didn't last long. Teddie let them know that this was his house and he needed some respect!

Nick and Nora are from the same litter and their looks and personalities are quite different from each other. Nicky has always been shy. He likes to stay in the bathroom curled up in his hidey-hole. Loves to give kisses. Teddie, the Mr Hyde personality, has scared Nicky a few times and when Nicky is back to not being so scared of Teddie, Hyde messes with Nicky again. While Nicky will run away when you ask him if he wants to be picked up, when it is time to brush teeth, he will hang around so he can get a nice snack of toothpaste.

Nora is more outspoken and quite vocal when it is time to be fed. When the food bowls are being disbursed, she will run around the dining table a few times and then will spin in a circle. Always counterclockwise, NEVER clockwise. One wonders why she does not get dizzy.
All but Vienna and Snausage can come upstairs when I am working in my office. Nora will not climb the stairs herself, so she must be carried up and down. Before going up, she will run around the coffee table in the living room, counterclockwise, and she needs to be herded away from the table so she can be scooped up and taken upstairs. Upstairs, Teddie is in charge and Nick and Nora often sit in the closet, but as time has passed Nora has taken to yelling back at Teddie when he tries to put her in her place. She also tries to get Teddie to play, bumping and pushing him, but he only wants to play with Amy. Amy wishes she was not his only playmate, which has changed with our latest arrival.

Scrappy, Mr Lovable

MrHoni had a booth at the Bay Area Pet Expo and MrsHoni came for the last hour to help pack up once the show was over. MrsHoni has been wanting a baby beagle for awhile and Teddie needed a playmate as Amy is getting older an Teddie annoys her too much. She has been avoiding coming to events because of all the dogs up for adoption
All day MrHoni was watching this adorable little "terrier" mix at San Jose Animal Care Center booth across the aisle. This little guy was so quiet and friendly; greeting all the dogs as they passed by.
MrsHoni showed up and loved him so much we had to take him to his forever home. Very quickly he became comfortable with the rest of our pack as well as they with him.
Teddie now has a new playmate where they chase and wrestle, while Amy is thanking us for bringing in a new pack member who can annoy Teddie!
After only a week, Scrappy was settled into his new home and turns out, he’s not so quiet. While not as barky as Nora and Teddie, he surprised us that he had a voice. His personality is unlike any of our others. He is a barrel of fun and will entertain himself, playing with toys, tossing bones in the air, running wild and making this grunting noise as he runs. He has become my new doggie model.
Above I said he was a "terrier" mix. His papers said he was wire fox terrier mix. I decided to get a DNA test and have a Guess the Breed contest. You can read more about the contest here as well as read a few other blog postings about Scrappy. Can’t say I believe the test because it tells me he’s not any of the breeds I would have guessed. My guess was Parson’s russell terrier, long-haired dachshund and border terrier.

Jax, Catch Me If You Can

Jax was not planned, but it’s to be expected.
MrsHoni has a friend who has her own little pack of guinea pigs and coordinates a yearly Pignic where people from the Bay Area bring their little ones for a social gathering. MrsHoni and I volunteered to help out.
It was held at the Marin Humane Society in Novato. Oh Oh, dogs live there and they’re up for adoption. During the day we watched several adoptable pups going out for walks and the thoughts were creeping in.
I have some friends who live close to Novato and gave them a call to come visit while we where there. They arrived near end of the event and were hanging out in the front of the Humane Society. When I was time to leave I searched for them and found them inside with MrsHoni. Oh no. Guess where the story goes….
Within an hour Jax was doing great with his new pack. Nicky and Nora paid no attention to him, Teddie and Amy checked him out a did a little bit of play. For Scrappy it was friends at first sight.
We’ve been thinking about another playmate for Jax. Teddie does love to play with Scrappy, but not nearly as much as Scrappy wants to play.
Jax and Scrappy are each about 2 years old and they have so much energy. The play tug with toys, chase each other and wrestle throughout the day. Teddie can’t keep up with this.
We were told Jax was very shy. His first week home was a bit frustrating as he will not let us pick him up. Its hide and seek under the dining table.
As I write this, after 7 weeks with us, he still won’t let us pick him up, but he gets very excited to see us and will come over for treats. At this point we think he may never let us pick him up, but there is always hope. We just give him love.

The Current Pack
Our current pack as we started 2018 was Amy, Teddie, Nora, Scrappy and Jax, however Nora passed in March and Amy in May. Nicky almost made it to Tucson with us, but he passed in June 2017.
